Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Resigns, Oath Ceremony Likely After May 11

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned to allow for the formation of a new government. The Governor, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, accepted Sarma’s request to dissolve the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly and asked him to stay on as the caretaker CM till the oath-taking ceremony.

After his meeting with the Governor, Sarma said that the new Ministry take the oath after May 11.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the BJP Parliamentary Board appointed Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda as the central observer and Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini as the co-observer for the election of the Assam BJP Legislature Party (BJPLP) leader.

Take Oath after 11 May

Sarma said that the BJPLP meeting would occur with Nadda and Saini present. After electing the leader, they hold a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting to propose support for the new BJPLP leader. He mentioned that the BJPLP meeting take place on or before May 11, adding that they receive the date from Nadda’s office by tomorrow, May 7.

A State BJP spokesperson indicated that PM Modi would likely attend the oath-taking ceremony.

The NDA dominated the single-phase elections on April 9, winning 102 out of 126 seats. The BJP secured 82 seats, just two short of the two-thirds majority. Allies AsomGanaParishad and Bodoland People’s Front each won 10 seats.
