Days after taking office, the BJP-led government in West Bengal stepped up its efforts to tackle illegal encroachment of public spaces. Earthmovers are now active in the state, targeting illegal buildings, and street vendors in Kolkata and its metropolitan area. A significant anti-encroachment operation occurred at Howrah and Sealdah railway stations late Saturday and concluded early Sunday.
Bulldozers in action in Kolkata
During the BJP government’s anti-encroachment campaign, Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh said that this is just the start of a broader effort to crack down on illegal construction across the state. He pledged to use bulldozers all over West Bengal.
Ghosh, who represents Kharagpur Sadar, urged people to follow the law or face consequences. He noted, “The new government has started this process from day one. We will not tolerate any form of encroachment on government land.”
Become ground zero for BJP Govt Anti Encroachment drive
Encroachment has long posed a significant political and urban management challenge in Kolkata. From roadside markets and makeshift stalls to illegal extensions on sidewalks and roads, large parts of the city blur the lines between formal and informal spaces.
Additionally, illegal construction, such as unauthorized extra floors, shop extensions, and buildings allegedly built without approvals become rising civic issues. The BJP claims that the Trinamool Congress, during its 15 years in power, supported these activities.
