Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday, May 29, 2026. Siddaramaiah will serve as caretaker Chief Minister until a successor is appointed. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shiva kumar will take over from Siddaramaiah.
Karnataka governor accepts CM resignation
A message from Lok Bhavan confirmed that the resignation has been accepted and that Siddaramaiah’s Council of Ministers has been dissolved.
Siddaramaiah submitted his one-line resignation to the Governor’s special secretary on Thursday, May 28, 2026, while Gehlot was in Indore for personal reasons.

In the meantime, Siddaramaiah will meet with Congress leaders today to talk about forming the next government and choosing a new president for the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. The Congress Legislative Party meeting will take place once the cabinet is finalized.
In Delhi, Siddaramaiah first met with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on May 29. He was joined by his colleagues K.J. George and Priyank Kharge, the son of the Congress president, along with his son Yathindra, who is an MLC.
