A cardiologist in Kolkata is making headlines for his “pre-election offer” to patients: a ₹500 discount for those who chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ when entering his office in Ballygunge.
Dr.Prakash Kumar Hazra, who is facing criticism over a social media post announcing this discount, remains unfazed. He believes he has every right to express his political opinion.
Kolkata Cardiologist offers Rs 500 discount in fees for chanting Jai Shri Ram
This cardiologist usually charges a consultation fee of ₹1,500. He said that ₹500 would be deducted for patients who chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ before entering his office.
His announcement quickly sparked backlash. Many questioned how a doctor could impose such conditions. They raised concerns about the ethical standards and integrity of the medical profession.
Used as political slogan
Dr. Hazra has put up a poster in his clinic showing him wearing a saffron scarf. The poster announces the discount, and he later shared these details on social media.
In response to the criticism, Dr.Hazra explained, “Just as Bidhan Chandra Roy became the CM of the state while being a physician and Dr. Shantanu Sen became an MP, I, too, have the right to express my political views.” He argued that ‘Jai Shri Ram’ is not just a religious chant; it has become a political slogan. Thus, he believes he is promoting this slogan in his practice.
However, some in the medical community are not convinced by his reasoning. According to several medical professionals, tying any political slogan or condition to medical services is fundamentally unethical.
