Mamata Banerjee Returns to Court as Lawyer in Post-Poll Violence Case

Former West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, wearing a black lawyer’s gown, appeared at the Calcutta High Court on Thursday for a case related to claims of post-poll violence in the state after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered a defeat in the Assembly elections.

This case, filed by Shirshanya Bandopadhyay, the son of senior TMC leader and advocate Kalyan Bandopadhyay, involves claims of attacks on political workers and party offices following the elections that ended the party’s 15-year rule and brought the BJP to power in the state.

In a post on X, the TMC said her appearance in court today showed her ongoing commitment, stating that she “never abandons the people of Bengal in their hour of need” and remains dedicated to the fight for truth, justice, and constitutional values.

It noted that she consistently rises above what it called the politics of hatred, showing “compassion, courage, and conviction.”

Will it lead political clash?

This case, which is still under judicial review, comes at a politically challenging time for the TMC, which is dealing with internal issues and growing criticism after its historic defeat. Since the results announced on May 4, several districts in the state have reported incidents of political violence, including clashes, vandalism, bomb attacks, and retaliatory assaults, with both the BJP and the TMC blaming each other for the unrest.

In one of the most notable incidents, Chandranath Rath, a close aide to CM Suvendu Adhikari shot dead on May 6 by unknown attackers, further worsening the tense situation in the state.
