13 out of 20 most polluted countries found is India, as per the World Air Quality Report 2024. the report is released by Swiss air quality technology company IQAir said Delhi is most polluted capital city in world, whereas India is ranked as world’s 5th most polluted country in 2024, down from 3rd in 2023.As per reports, India saw 7% decline in PM 2.5 concentrations , averaging 50.6 micrograms per cubic metre, compared to 54.4 micrograms per cubic metre in 2023. What World Air Quality Report shows
delhi records the high pollution levels, with an annual average PM2.5 concentration of 91.6 micrograms per cubic metre, nearly unchanged from 92.7 micrograms per cubic metre in 2023.
13 Indian cities found populated are delhi, Mullanpur, byrnihat, Faridabad, Loni, New Delhi, Gurugram, Ganganagar, Greater Noida, Bhiwadi, Muzaffarnagar, Hanumangarh and Noida. Overall, 35% of Indian cities reported annual PM2.5 levels exceeding to 10 times WHO limit of 5 micrograms per cubic metre
Lancet Planetary Health study
As per Lancet Planetary Health study published last year, there are around 1.5 million deaths in India every year from 2009 to 2019 were linked to long-term exposure to PM2.5 pollution.
World Air Quality Report 2024 shows small air pollution particles less than 2.5 microns, that can enter the lungs and bloodstream, and cause breathing problems, heart disease and also cancer. On this, Former WHO chief scientist and health ministry advisor Soumya Swaminathan said India made huge progress in air quality data collection but still not take suitable action.
