After layoffs and researchers leaving Meta, CEO Mark Zuckerberg once invested heavily in the advancement of artificial intelligence. As AI continues to evolve, Meta is attempting to find its footing among industry leaders like OpenAI. A third of the company’s AI researchers have left Meta due to burnout or a lack of faith in Meta over the past year, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The White House left Meta off of its summit for “companies at the forefront of AI innovation” in 2013, after Zuckerberg recruited Yann LeCun, an AI “godfather.”
WSJ reported that Meta is working to correct previous missteps that shifted focus away from generative AI.
The Wall Street Journal reported that under LeCun, AI researchers found it difficult to develop large language models for programs like ChatGPT.
“Generative AI has seen some incredible breakthroughs in the last year – qualitative breakthroughs,” he said.
As reported by WSJ, Meta has also lost many researchers over the past year who feel burned out or uncertain about Meta’s future in artificial intelligence. Even more employees left OpenAI when ChatGPT was released in November, which effectively accelerated the race for AI innovation. With the help of viral fake images of Pope Francis and Donald Trump, Midjourney has gained attention in a year since its launch.
Only 26% of Meta employees responded to an internal survey conducted between April 26 and May 10.
According to Zuckerberg, 2023 will be “the year of efficiency.” Meta laid off over 11,000 employees in November and shut down projects throughout the year.
