Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra recently suggested that taxpayers take steps to ensure their income tax returns ITR for the financial year 2022-2023 are filed before the July 31, 2023 deadline. Yet, a LocalCircles survey showed that 27% of the individual taxpayers polled had not submitted theirs yet, with another 14% claiming they will not make it in time.
There has been a delay in filing ITR returns in India due to heavy monsoons and floods in July, causing havoc across the country.
There have been floods, landslides, and excessive rains in Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Delhi NCR, resulting in thousands of people being displaced. Many individuals have been disrupted by power outages that last for hours and even days as a result of the floods.
People seem to be suggesting the government consider extending the income tax filing deadline by two weeks based on feedback from community discussions on LocalCircles.
