Ex-Congress MP Sajjan Kumar sentenced to life imprisonment in 1984 anti-Sikh riots Case

On Tuesday, Delhi court awarded the life imprisonment to former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in murder case of 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Special judge Kaveri Baweja pronounce the judgement for the alleged killing of Jaswant Singh and son Tarundeep Singh on 1 November, 1984. The complainant, wife of Jaswant, and prosecution demands death penalty for Kumar.

The offence of murder carried the punishment of death penalty, and minimum sentence was life imprisonment. On 12 Feb, the court convicted Kumar for the offence and demands report from Tihar Central Jail on his psychiatric and psychological evaluation

Sajjan Kumar get life imprisonment for 1984 anti-Sikh riots Case

Sajjan Kumar is lodged in Tihar jail currently. Though Punjabi Bagh Police Station register case, special investigation team conducts investigation much later. The prosecution alleged a mob, armed with deadly weapons, resorted to large-scale looting, arson and destruction of properties of Sikhs to avenge the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi.

The prosecution also claimed, “The mob attacked on house of the complainant, wife of Jaswant, and kill men aside from looting articles and setting their house ablaze.

Prosecution Sought death Penalty for Sajjan

The prosecution earlier sought death penalty for Sajjan Kumar. In written submission, the prosecution argued that the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case was more serious than murder case and Nirbhaya gang rape. It involved the targeting of an entire community.

“ The present case is more serious than Nirbhaya case.” In this case, the young women was targeted, but in this case, people of sikh community were attacked.”
