The Punjab govt launched a campaign on Friday to remove stray dogs from public spaces. CM Bhagwant Mann said that the state will follow the Supreme Court order closely.
“The Punjab government will strictly follow the Supreme Court order from May 19, 2026. According to the SC orders, we will remove stray dogs from all busy public areas so that children, senior citizens, and families can move freely without fearing for their safety,” Mann posted on X.
Punjab Launches Stray Dog Removal from Schools
“We create and maintain enough dog shelters where they can be cared for properly,” Mann wrote.
He mentioned that they would use legally allowed measures, including euthanasia, for rabid, incurably ill, or dangerously aggressive dogs that threaten human safety. He emphasized that actions will comply with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules.
Issue order for stray dogs
According to an official statement, Mann confirmed that the Punjab government will implement the Supreme Court’s directions about stray dogs, ensuring both public safety and humane animal care. He reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting human lives and animal welfare.
He said the government dedicated to handling the issue in a humane and legal way while also keeping public safety a priority. “Matters related to public safety and issues important to people always given the highest priority by the Punjab government,” he said.
