Rahul Gandhi has approached the Allahabad High Court regarding his comments about Sikhs. The Congress leader is challenging an order from a special MP-MLA court in Varanasi. This court directed a subordinate court to reconsider an application for registering an FIR against him for remarks he made during a visit to the US in 2024.
Rahul Gandhi remarks on Sikhs community
The case is set to be heard on September 1 (Monday) by Justice Sameer Jain. On November 28, 2024, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM MP-MLA) in Varanasi rejected an application from Nageshwar Mishra, who sought to register an FIR against Gandhi. The ACJM ruled that since the speech took place in the US, it fell outside their jurisdiction.
Mishra challenged this ruling in the sessions court. On July 21, 2025, the Special Judge (MP/MLA) instructed the ACJM to review the case again. Gandhi has since filed a revision petition in the Allahabad High Court, arguing that the special court’s order is wrong, illegal, and beyond its authority.
Congress Remarks on Sikhs Led protests
During a program in the US in September 2024, Rahul Gandhi said that the environment in India is not good for Sikhs. Many considered these comments to be provocative and divisive, leading to protests. Nageshwar Mishra, a resident of Varanasi, attempted to register an FIR against Gandhi at the Sarnath police station in Varanasi. When that effort failed, he turned to the court for action against the Congress leader.
