Should The Legal Drinking Age Be Lowered?

Don’t know how many songs start coming to mind as soon as the word alcohol is spoken. Isn’t it, but we all know how harmful it is? And we also know that we humans tend to do more of what we are told not to do.

And this drinking in the beginning and then getting addicted is a different thing, drinking alcohol has become common for men and now also for women, but actually the issue is, are these young children who drink  Correct?  Or should the drinking age be reduced?  It is a matter to think about.

If you remember in 2020, during the lockdown, many liquor vends were opened.  Talking about the capital of India, Delhi, the committee had suggested to open such a government liquor shop in all the 70 assemblies of Delhi, in which the license to sell country liquor was given.  However, the purpose of this committee was just to increase the revenue of Delhi during that time.

Whatever may be the purpose.  But this committee had reduced the drinking age in Delhi from 25 years to 21 years.

So the question is still the same, should there be a lower age to drink alcohol?

Everyone may have different opinions on this issue, but according to a 2022 study by Cantor and NFX, it has been reported that a person’s ability to drink alcohol at a certain age may not vary by region.  And it has also been said that from the age of 18, you can choose your own leader, that is, you can vote.  Can also get married, although now the age of marriage has also been increased.

But let us tell you that there are many states where the drinking age is 25 and above 25.  Those under 25 are not allowed to drink alcohol.

States where the minimum age for drinking alcohol is less than 18

The legal drinking age in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar, Goa, Puducherry, Rajasthan and Sikkim is at least 18 years.

States where the minimum drinking age is 21

The minimum legal drinking age is 21 years in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.  That is, people of 21 years or above can drink alcohol in these states.

States in which the minimum age has been reduced or increased

The minimum drinking age in Kerala is 23 years. Whereas in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, the minimum legal age for drinking is 25 years.  In Delhi too, the minimum drinking age used to be 25 years.  But in the new year 2020, this age was reduced to 21 years.

And let us also tell you that there is liquor ban in Bihar and Gujarat.

Disadvantages of underage drinking

Among young men who drink alcohol, they are more likely to be harmed, especially at a young age.  When they are young, they have a habit of using alcohol more.  Only later do they come to know about its side effects.  If you drink a lot of alcohol in your teenage age, then beware of this habit as it can make you a victim of hypertension.  This is stated by Dr. Rajneesh Kapoor, Cardiologist and Director of Interventional Cardiology at Medanta The Medicity, Gurgaon.  In research, he did his study on 475 patients, from which he got the result that there is a problem of hypertension in young people who consume alcohol.
