According to the state government, the line from Harmuti to Naharlagun was approved in 2006, but the alignment had to be changed in 2010. He also stated on the occasion that the development of a nation requires a good infrastructure network. According to him, it is imperative to bring about a qualitative shift as well as a comprehensive, integrated approach in developing infrastructure in the country to meet the aspirations and long-felt needs of its citizens.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Shipping said that all National Highways will be free of railway level crossings by 2019. Moreover, to prevent frequent accidents and deaths at level crossings. 

6. The Rajmarg Zila Sanjoyokta Pariyojna

Last week, in a meeting with the Cabinet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the development of 6,600 km of highways at the estimated cost of Rs 60,000 crore.

  • Developed roads will join 100 district headquarters throughout the country under the Rashtriya Rajmarg Zila Sanjoyokta Pariyojna. There are 6,600 kilometers of national highways, but they do not all follow the same layout. Senior officials at the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) explained that they will be upgraded to improve connectivity.
  • The government has also implemented policy initiatives designed to facilitate resource mobilization to support this mega push for road development. Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved a policy on Wednesday for developers to exit highway projects two years after construction completes, releasing locked-in equity also used as a potential capital for future projects.

7. The Inland Waterway System

As an indication of an increase in cargo traffic, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) plans to buy eight to ten inland cargo vessels to move cargo along two key waterways – the Ganga and the Brahmaputra.

In the next three to four years, the Government also expects there will be a demand for 150-200 barges/vessels on the Ganga (National Waterways 1).

As inland water transport is also an efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation, IWAI officials predict that cargo traffic on the two waterways, called the National Waterways 1 and 2, will double to 65 million tonnes by the year 2020.

8. Gas pipeline between Gujarat and Gorakhpur

A pipeline from the Gujarat coast to Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh is being laid by the state-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC) to meet the growing demand for cooking gas in the country.

The pipeline from Kandla in Gujarat to Gorakhpur will run via Ahmedabad, Ujjain, Bhopal, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, and Lucknow. The pipeline will also be the country’s largest.

9. Project Chardham-Highway

A proposed dual-lane (in each direction) express national highway with a diameter of 10 meters (in the state of Uttarakhand), known as the Char Dham Mahamarg National Highway. By connecting the four holy places in Uttarakhand, the proposed highway will complement the under development Char Dham Railway. The project will also include 900 km of national highways that will link the state as a whole.

Along the way, there will also be bypasses, viaducts, bridges, parking areas, helipads, helicopter emergency responders, etc.

10. The highest bridge in the world over the Chenab River

There is a railway arch bridge construct between Bakkal and Kauri in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir that bears the Chenab name. This will be the world’s highest rail bridge. When finished, at a height of 359 meters (1,178 feet) above the Chenab River. In November 2017, the base also supports of the bridge completed. This makes it possible to start construction on the main arch. According to the bridge’s schedule, it will open by 2019, though this seems very optimistic.
