BJP gain strong lead in West Bengal Assembly Elections
As of 1:40 p.m., the BJP was leading in 194 seats, while the TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, was ahead in 92. Suvendu Adhikari, the West Bengal Leader of the Opposition and BJP candidate from Nandigram and Bhabanipur, expressed certainty that the party would turn its early advantage into a victory.
“BJP is forming the government. Early trends show the BJP much ahead of the TMC,” Adhikari told reporters. He mentioned that the Bhabanipur contest could be very close in the early counts, but he expected the BJP to gain a larger lead as the counting continued.

He credited the party’s success to anti-incumbency and what he called a unification of Hindu votes. He also highlighted a split in minority voting patterns in areas like Malda, Murshidabad, and Uttar Dinajpur.
West Bengal saw one of its highest-ever voter turnouts in the Assembly elections across 294 constituencies, with 93.19% participation in Phase I and 91.66% in Phase II. This brought the overall turnout to 92.47%, according to the ECI.
