The possibility of Sharad Pawar retiring from active politics is significant because the veteran politician gives such vibes. At 83 years of age, he decided on Tuesday that he was not going to seek electoral office again.
This makes him focus more on building the next set of younger leadership. Speaking while canvassing for his grandnephew, Yugendra Pawar, at Baramati, Pawar opined that one had to stop somewhere, giving off signals that the coming Maharashtra Assembly poll might be the end.
Sharad Pawar decides retiring after serving for another 1.5 years
During his speech, Sharad Pawar’s retiring news was underscored by his commitment to serve while passing the torch to the next generation. He pointed out his present position in the Rajya Sabha by saying, “There is still one and a half years left.” However, he clarified his intention of not seeking re-election to either the Lok Sabha or future elections.
Over a period of more than 57 years, Pawar had seen an illustrious political career, winning every election after he first became an MLA in 1967. However, he stressed the need to pave the way for new leadership. “I have contested 14 times, and you have never sent me home. But I will have to stop somewhere to bring the new generation forward,” he explained.
New era in Maharashtra politics
Sharad Pawar’s decision to retire as an experienced politician marks a landmark moment, not only in his life but also within the folds of Maharashtra politics. The statesman has been the chief minister four times and holds other important positions in the Union cabinet, such as defence under the UPA regime and also agriculture. It was after this troubled period of political upheaval that included an early parting of ways by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) this year.
A year ago, he had rubbished talk of retirement, saying that he was neither tired nor looking to retire. Now, he is emphasizing the need to groom future leaders who can take Maharashtra to the centuries ahead. As he steps into retirement, his legacy in Maharashtra politics will be felt for some time to come.
