On Friday, the Rajya Sabha erupted into chaos when opposition members moved a no-trust motion against Vice President and Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Motion caused considerable discontinuities between Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Mr. Dhankhar, in the end resulting in the termination of the session for that day.
Defending himself, Mr. Dhankhar declared, “I am a farmer’s son. I will not waver in the face of challenges. Mr. Kharge countered, asserting, “If you are a farmer’s son, I am the son of a laborer”. He accused Mr. Dhankhar of favoring the treasury benches and silencing the opposition, claiming, “You are insulting Congress leaders. We are here to argue, not to hear your self-congratulation.“
No-Trust Motion Against Jagdeep Becomes Center of Allegations
The no-trust motion against Jagdeep Dhankhar also became the center of allegations of bias. Opposition leaders accused Mr. Dhankhar of being complicit in upsetting lawmaking behavior by BJP members while suppressing accusations. In the light of these allegations, Mr. Dhankhar unambiguously assured, “I will kill for the country, but not compromise.”
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge raised concerns over perceived unfairness, alleging that the Chairman allotted more time to BJP MPs. “You are disrespecting me and my party. How can I respect you?” he asked. Hispanophones took heated arguments in the no-trust motion against Jagdeep Dhankhar, with both sides also refusing to back down.
Leader of the House and BJP stalwart JP Nadda defended Mr. Dhankhar, accusing Congress of obstructing parliamentary proceedings. He asserted that the opposition had been given all the chances to voice themselves, yet selected confrontation rather than cooperation. The session was adjourned amid the uproar, with the House set to reconvene on December 16.
During this time, the House of the People conducted a two-day discussion on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the dialogue and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to conclude it. On the opposition side, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is set to make her first parliamentary speech, offering a sharp counter to the ruling party.
