Shortly after Julian Alvarez struck the crossbar for Atletico, Arsenal defender Gabriel opened the scoring with a header from a Declan Rice free kick in the 57th minute. Seven minutes later, Martinelli capped off a flowing attack. Gyokeres scored his first goal of the night after a deflection, ending a nine-game scoring drought for both club and country. He added a second goal when Atletico struggled with another set piece.
This victory extended Arsenal’s unbeaten streak to 9 games and brought them to nine points in the group stage, putting them on track for the knockout rounds. Atletico, now on three points, will need to regroup after their six-game unbeaten run across all competitions came to a sudden end.
Arsenal Dominate Early but Atletico Collapse After Resilient Start
Arsenal began confidently after climbing to the top of the Premier League. They nearly took the lead when Eberechi Eze’s shot deflected off David Hancko and hit the crossbar. Myles Lewis-Skelly shot wide, and Bukayo Saka was denied by a block from Atletico keeper Jan Oblak.
The visitors initially held up under pressure but almost took the lead when Arsenal keeper David Raya was caught too far out of the goal. Alvarez had a clear chance but curled his shot wide. After Alvarez hit Arsenal’s crossbar with a great effort right after the restart, the outcome was still uncertain, but Atletico soon fell apart.
