Hours after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government led by Tarique Rahman took office on Tuesday, the new state minister for youth and sports, Aminul Haque, indicated that Dhaka was looking to repair its strained cricket ties with India. This strain followed the fallout over the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Bangladesh make move to repair ties with India
Haque hinted at this shift during discussions with India’s Deputy High Commissioner. He expressed a desire to settle differences through friendly talks, according to reports. He also criticized the election of the Bangladesh Cricket Board officials, who were in charge during the fallout, calling it questionable.
Cricket relations soured under the interim leadership of Muhammad Yunus when overall India-Bangladesh ties weakened.
Dhaka seeking to reset cricket relations with India
With a new government in place after the elections in Dhaka, former Bangladesh football captain Aminul Haque was sworn in as State Minister for Youth and Sports. He shared his intention to mend the damaged cricketing ties with India.
“Immediately after taking office, I met with the Deputy High Commissioner of India and discussed how to resolve the issue through friendly talks. We want to maintain good relations with our neighbors and tackle problems in sports through diplomatic dialogue. In cricket, we will take necessary measures following ICC rules through discussions,” Aminul Haque told Dhaka-based newspaper, The Daily Star.
