Rajasthan Royals (RR) announced on Saturday that head coach Rahul Dravid has resigned from his position with the franchise ahead of the IPL 2026 season. In September of last year, Dravid was officially named RR’s new head coach on a multi-year contract after completing his 3-year term with the Indian team that concluded with the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup victory.
In its statement, RR mentioned that during a recent organizational review, the franchise offered Dravid a broader role. However, the former India captain and head coach has decided not to accept the position.
Role of Rahul Dravid in Rajasthan Royals Team
“Rahul has been central to the Royals’ journey over many years. His leadership has influenced a generation of players and built strong values in the squad. He has left a lasting mark on the culture of the franchise. The Rajasthan Royals, its players, and millions of fans worldwide extend heartfelt thanks to Rahul for his remarkable service to the franchise,” the statement read.
Dravid captained RR in IPL 2012 and 2013, before serving as their team mentor in the 2014 and 2015 seasons. His return to the RR set-up ahead of IPL 2025 raised expectations for the franchise to secure its second IPL title after winning the first edition of the tournament in 2008.
IPL struggles led into Player resignation from team
Unfortunately, RR keep in a disappointing 9th place with only four wins in 14 league matches. Regular skipper Sanju Samson played just nine matches due to a side stress, and Riyan Parag stepped in as captain when the wicketkeeper-batter was unavailable.
Now, Rahul Dravid return to the RR team lasted less than a year, and the franchise looks to build for the 2026 IPL. IANS reports that Dravid’s departure from RR follows rumors of differences and stress in the team during IPL 2025.
