Nearly 2 lakh tech employees have been laid off worldwide in 2023, from Big Tech firms to startups, as companies like Meta, BT, Vodafone and many others have announced further plans to lay off more employees in the coming months. The year 2023 has become the worst year for tech employees in history.

This year, 695 tech companies have laid off around 1.98 lakh employees, according to layoff tracking site Layoffs.fyi.

By comparison, 1,046 tech companies laid off more than 1.61 lakh employees in 2022.

Nearly 1 lakh tech workers worldwide lost their jobs in January alone, primarily at Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, and others.

3.6 lakh tech workers have lost their jobs in 2022 and until May of this year.

Many Big Tech companies continue to lay off employees, citing over-hiring, uncertain global macroeconomic conditions, and the Covid-19 pandemic as reasons for doing so.

According to reports, Meta (formerly Facebook) will begin laying off more employees next week.

In this round of layoffs, approximately 6,000 employees are expected to be laid off.

This month, Amazon India laid off around 400-500 employees from its AWS Cloud division as well as People Experience and Technology Solutions (PXT).

The fintech unicorn Zepz is laying off 420 employees, or 26 percent of its workforce.

By the end of the decade, BT Group plans to cut 55,000 jobs.

Over the next three years, Vodafone plans to cut 11,000 jobs to simplify both its headquarters and local markets.

As global macroeconomic conditions continue to plague Big Tech, Microsoft will not raise salaries for salaried employees or senior leaders this year.
