Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister of Kenya, died on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at a private hospital in Koothattukulam. The hospital is located in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. He dies at 80 years old.
Raila Odinga dies due to cardiac arrest
Around 8 a.m., while on his morning walk at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Center, he suffered a cardiac arrest. Afterward, he was taken to Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, where he was pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m.
According to the authorities at Sreedhareeyam Hospital, Mr. Odinga had first sought treatment at a private hospital in Mumbai after experiencing a stroke. He was accompanied by his youngest daughter and a personal doctor.
Mr. Odinga had a strong connection with Sreedhareeyam Hospital, as his elder daughter, Rosemary Odinga, received treatment there after she lost her sight completely in 2017 due to optic nerve damage. He expressed his gratitude to the doctors at the center for helping her regain her vision after treatment began in 2019.
Journey as PM
Raila Odinga served as the Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013. He was also the Member of Parliament for the Langata constituency from 1992 to 2013 and had been the Leader of the Opposition in Kenya for an extended period.
