State officials warn of halted payments. Texas officials stated that if the shutdown goes past 27 October, SNAP benefits for November will not be distributed. Pennsylvania has issued a similar warning. The Department of Human Services announced that payments “cannot be made” if the deadlock in Washington continues, according to ABC News.
Food items become more expensive
On Monday, 20 October, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom remarked that the failure to reopen the federal government “is now endangering people’s lives and making basic needs like food more expensive.” Other states, including Minnesota and New York, have informed residents that their benefits are “at risk” or “may be delayed.”
Impact of Government Shutdown Halts SNAP Benefits spreads to the WIC food program. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is also running low on funds. The White House previously approved $300 million in temporary support to keep the program running through October. However, state agencies warn that funds could run out as early as 1 November.
