Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba, traveled on the iconic Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo to Sendai. This ride marked the last part of his two-day official visit to Japan. The leaders covered the 370-kilometre distance together, reflecting friendship and India-Japan Ties.
Upon arriving in Sendai, PM Modi met Indian train drivers currently in specialized training with Japanese Railways. His arrival excited local crowds, who welcomed him with chants of “Modi-san, welcome!”
Train Ride Strengthens India-Japan Ties
Sharing their journey on social media, Prime Minister Ishiba posted on X: “On my way to Sendai with Prime Minister Modi. As with last night, I will be accompanying him in the car.” The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) praised the ride as a strong sign of goodwill between the two countries. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “A journey of friendship and progress. In a unique gesture symbolizing the warmth of the India-Japan friendship, PM Modi and PM Shigeru Ishiba traveled together to Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture on the Shinkansen.”
Earlier in Tokyo, Modi spoke with governors from 16 Japanese prefectures. He pushed for closer collaboration between states and prefectures under an initiative launched at the 15th Annual India-Japan Summit.

Writing on X, he said, “This morning in Tokyo, I interacted with the governors of 16 prefectures of Japan. State-prefecture cooperation is a key part of India-Japan friendship. This is also why we launched a separate initiative on it during the 15th Annual India-Japan Summit yesterday.”
Highlighting opportunities for joint ventures, PM Modi added, “There is great potential to work together in areas like trade, innovation, entrepreneurship, and more and boost India-Japan Ties. Future sectors like startups, technology, and AI can also offer benefits.”
