Modi Calls for Austerity to Save Foreign Exchange Amid Oil Crisis

Modi urge the Indians to avoid destination weddings abroad, limit foreign travel, reduce edible oil usage and adopt work from home to save resources. He present it as voluntary steps to conserve foreign exchange amid West Asia crisis, that disrupts their oil and gas supplies.

Economic logic behind Modi calling voluntary austerity

Analysts estimate that India could save over $45 billion annually if households cut back on crude oil, gold, edible oils, and foreign travel as Modi suggested. With forex reserves dropping from $728 billion in February to $691 billion in April, and a growing current account deficit projected at $84.5 billion, these savings could ease pressure on the currency. Gold imports alone reached $71.98 billion in FY 2025-26, making it a significant burden on reserves amid rising global prices.

Opposition frames austerity as policy failure

Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders accused the Modi of passing the costs of economic mismanagement onto citizens through lifestyle restrictions.

They argued that after more than a decade in power, the government should tackle structural issues like inflation, unemployment, and currency depreciation instead of telling people what to buy or where to travel. Critics also pointed out Modi’s own extensive travel schedule, which undermines his message about fuel conservation.
