On Friday, US President Donald Trump criticised India for charging the huge tariffs on their country. The 78-year-old Republican, whose tariff announcements sent stock markets into a tailspin, said that India agreed to slash tariffs.
He told to reporters, “India charges us huge tariffs. You can’t sell anything in India. They agreed by way they want to cut tariffs way down because somebody is exposing them for what they done.”
Trump criticised India for high tariffs
Trump who took office on 20 January, has criticised India for high tariffs imposed by India and some other countries. He address in joint session of Congress on Tuesday, and termed the tariffs as “very unfair”.
Trump said in address, “Other countries have used tariffs against us for decades, and now it is time to start using them against that countries.” He said, “ India charge us auto tariffs higher than 100 %.”
Donald Trump planned tariffs from 2 April
After Trump criticised India, he has planned to impose tariffs from 2 April and it targets various countries. In a joint press conference with PM Modi at the white house last month, he said that India has “been very strong on tariffs”.
US President said, “I don’t blame them, necessarily, but it is different way to do business. It is hard to sell into India because they have trade barriers, strong tariffs.” As per reports, the US’ total goods trade with India was estimated at USD 129.2 billion in 2024. US goods exports to India were USD 41.8 billion in 2024. The US goods trade deficit with India was USD 45.7 billion, a 5.4 % increase over 2023
