U.S. President Donald Trump said in letter that he’s going to raise taxes on many imported items from Canada to 35%. It cause a rift between the two North American countries, which have suffered a debilitating blow to their years-old alliance.
Trump administration hit Canada
The letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is a competitive boost to the top 25% tariff rates that Mr. Trump first imposed in March after months of threats. Mr. Trump’s tariff lists have been allegedly with a view to getting Canada to crack down on fentanyl smuggling, no matter the notably modest trafficking in the drug from America. Mr. Trump has also expressed frustration with an trade deficit with Canada that reflects oil purchases by America.
“I need to point out that the waft of Fentanyl is hardly the most effective project we have with Canada, which has many Tariff, and Non-Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers,” Mr. Trump wrote in the letter.
Mr. Carney elected Prime Minister in April on the argument that Canadians need to hold their “elbows up.” He has responded by distancing Canada from its intertwined relationship with the U.S., seeking to bolster its links with the European Union and the UK.
Canada response on tariffs Letter
Hours before Mr. Trump’s letter, Mr. Carney posted on X an image of himself with British PM Keir Starmer, said, “In the face of global trade challenges, the arena is turning to official financial partners like Canada.”
“Just the way it is,” Mr. Trump said at the time. Mr. Carney indicated he are willing to be victim in pursuing talks on trade. “It involved larger forces,” the Canadian chief said. “And this can make the effort and some discussions.”
