US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 200 % tariffs on French wine and champagne because France plans to reject his invitation to join his “Board of Peace.” He also shared a private message from French President Emmanuel Macron about Greenland in a Truth Social post.
Trump’s attack on France came after Paris mocked Washington by ridiculing US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s justification for Trump’s obsession with the Arctic territory, which belongs to Denmark.
What Trump Said about tariffs on French Goods?
“I’ll put a 200 % tariff on his wines and champagnes. And he’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join,” Trump said, speaking about French President Emmanuel Macron. The US-proposed board was initially meant to oversee the rebuilding of war-torn Gaza, but its charter doesn’t seem to limit its role to just the occupied Palestinian territory.
He later posted a message from Macron, where the French President said they agree on issues related to Iran and Syria but expressed that he did not “understand” what Trump was “doing on Greenland.”
France ‘Mocks’ in Private Message
This escalation followed a report from news agency said that France “does not intend to answer favorably” to Trump ‘Board of Peace’ invitation. The charter of the board “go beyond the sole framework of Gaza.
France also ridiculed the US regarding Trump’s Greenland initiative. The official account of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs mocked Scott Bessent’s justification for Trump’s actions in a post on X, comparing it to deliberately causing harm to prevent a hypothetical future crisis.
