A newlywed woman died under suspicious circumstances at her home in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, just a year after getting married. Her family claims that she was a victim of dowry harassment and murder. Her in-laws, however, insist she took her own life.
The deceased, Palak Rajak, contacted her father around 20 minutes before her death. She pleaded for him to take her out of her in-laws’ house. Family members say she faced ongoing mental and physical abuse due to dowry demands.
Gwalior newlywed died by suicide
Palak married Amit Rajak, an Air Force outsourced employee, on April 14, 2025. Her family stated that they provided gold, silver, a motorcycle, and other gifts at the wedding. Despite this, her husband, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law continued to demand a car and a gold chain. They also claimed that the fixed deposit receipts given during the marriage were cashed by her in-laws.
Palak’s relatives accused her in-laws of repeatedly harassing her after marriage, isolating her at home, and even denying her food.
Blame In laws for harassment
According to her father, Palak called him the night of May 12. She told him that no one in the house talked to her and that she had not eaten properly for three days. “Papa, take me away from here. They keep demanding a car and a gold chain. They are harassing me continuously. These people will kill me,” she reportedly told him.
Her father promised to send her brother to bring her home. He noted that Palak sounded scared and was crying during the call.
About 20 minutes later, her husband Amit allegedly called the family to say that Palak had hanged herself. When her relatives arrived at the house, she was already dead. The family noticed injury marks on her neck, legs, and other parts of her body, raising concerns about possible murder. Angry relatives later blocked a road in protest, demanding a fair investigation, video documentation of the postmortem, and a forensic inquiry.
