Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay ordered the renovation and modernization of Amma Unavagams, the state-run canteens that provide affordable meals to the public across Tamil Nadu. Currently, 383 Amma Canteens operate under the Greater Chennai Corporation, while another 237 run by municipal corporations and municipalities around the state.

This decision came after the Chief Minister received reports about the quality and taste of food served at the canteens. The government is taking steps to improve these facilities.
According to an official statement issued by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Office, Chief Minister Vijay reviewed the operation of Amma canteens and noted that many centers need urgent repairs and better infrastructure. The Municipal Administration Department instructed to start renovation work immediately and to improve operational standards at all outlets.

Officials also told to replace damaged utensils and old kitchen equipment, modernize cooking facilities, and enhance maintenance standards to ensure safer and more efficient food preparation. Authorities need to evaluate the immediate needs of each canteen and prioritize procurement and repair work.
The goal is to ensure that daily wage laborers, urban workers, and economically weaker groups continue to receive affordable and nutritious meals through the Amma canteen network. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister also instructed officials to closely monitor food quality and hygiene. Complaints from the public addressed quickly. Local bodies must conduct regular inspections and keep kitchens and dining areas clean.
