Wrong leg operated at MDM Hospital, Rajasthan
Champa Devi, 66, had been injured in a fight and was admitted to MDM Hospital. Although she had fractures in both legs, the doctor decided she only needed surgery on the right leg.
The operation took place on April 27. However, it became clear after the surgery that the wrong leg had been operated on. In response to the incident, the hospital administration formed an inquiry committee to investigate allegations of negligence.
Strict action against Doctor
Following the panel’s findings, Dr. Ramakishan Chaudhary, Associate Professor of Orthopedics, has been relieved of his duties at MDM Hospital Rajasthan and transferred to the Medical Education Department in Jaipur, where he will await a new assignment. The committee determined that there was clear supervisory negligence on his part. Initially, Dr. Chaudhary claimed the woman needed surgery on both legs, asserting that the right leg would be treated later.
However, the investigation concluded that negligence was indeed responsible for the mistake. The panel found that the error stemmed from failure to follow Standard Operating Procedures.
