Images shared by the store on social media showed water pooling inside. Knee-deep water filled narrow aisles, soaking stacks of books. These visuals highlighted the extent of damage caused by the sudden downpour. “Due to heavy rain in Bangalore, we lost 4,000 to 5,000 books,” the bookstore said.
Thousands of Books Damaged Amid Waterlogging in Bengaluru
The flooding damaged between 4,000 and 5,000 books, many of that stored from floor to ceiling—a common feature of the store known for its tightly packed shelves.
Located on bustling Church Street, the bookstore has a destination for readers looking for both new and used titles in different genres. The flooding’s impact has been particularly significant, as it has affected a large portion of its inventory.
The damage follows intense rain spells that have hit several areas of Bengaluru in recent days, leading to waterlogging in many spots.

Founded over twenty years ago, The Bookworm has built a strong reputation among the city’s reading community. It often seen as a cultural landmark for book lovers in Bengaluru, attracting regular visitors and occasional readers alike.
The store run by Krishna Gowda, known to customers as “Bookworm Krishna” or the “Bookman of Bengaluru.” He recognized for keeping an independent bookstore alive in a prime commercial area, even as rising rents and changes in reading habits make it hard for such businesses to survive.
