IPL 2022 edition proves to be a run-fest after latest record broken

IPL 2022 edition

The IPL has often produced some spellbinding moments. It has left fans in shock and awe over the years, but the IPL 2022 edition of the tournament will live long in fans’ memories.

It has been an extravaganza and the fans have helped create a carnival atmosphere. One key takeaway about this T20 cricket competition is that it usually favours the batsmen who are prepared to swing their arms freely and launch the ball out of the ground.

As always, there has been plenty of ferocious hitting and last weekend, the 15th edition of the IPL saw another record tumble – the most number of sixes hit at a single tournament.

Liam Livingstone smashed a six for the Punjab Kings in the 15th over against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in the last league-stage game and this brought up 1000 sixes for the tournament – the highest in the IPL’s history.

Livingstone coincidentally holds the record for the longest six hit (117m) in the IPL, which he hit against this season’s finalists – the Gujarat Titans.

Against Hyderabad, Livingstone was sensational as he produced an unbeaten knock of 49 runs, as the Kings managed to chase down a target of 158 with just under five overs remaining and with five wickets intact.

The IPL is never short on drama, and over the past few years, it has certainly evolved. While initially there may have been some scepticism about how the tournament would be received, it has proved all of its doubters wrong and it is one of the most exciting cricket tournaments. Indeed, the best cricket betting sites, such as bet365 and Betfair, will be replete with a wide range of outright markets, as well as prop style bets for players to tuck into, such as ‘Who will score the most runs in an innings’ or ‘Who will pick up the most wickets in an innings’.

Indeed, this year’s IPL has been a run-fest and a cursory glance at some stats only serves to underline this point. At the time of writing, Jos Buttler hit over 700 runs in 15 innings for the Rajasthan Royals, averaging just over 51.

Meanwhile, the Royals occupy the top two spots for the highest run totals posted during the tournament. Against the Delhi Capitals, they plundered a mammoth 222 runs for the loss of just two wickets, while they wound up with 217/5 against the Kolkata Knight Riders last month.

The Final is set to be a spectacle and while it will be sad to see the IPL close a new chapter on another thrilling tournament, the IPL 2022 edition has certainly set the benchmark on the run-scoring front.
