The Indian Cricket Team has started its highly awaited white-ball tour of Australia. They left New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday morning. This tour includes three ODIs and five T20Is, beginning on Sunday in Perth.
It marks the return of stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to international play for the first time since their successful run at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Both players, now focused on the 50-over format. They closely watched as they aim to confirm their worth ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
Indian Cricket Team New leadership
The attention won’t just be on Kohli and Rohit; it also shines on Shubman Gill, who is now India’s full-time white-ball captain. The 24-year-old opener was appointed earlier this month. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed this decision, explaining that he had personally informed Rohit about the change in captaincy.
Agarkar pointed out that this move considers long-term goals, with the 2027 World Cup as the main target. While Rohit has accepted this change gracefully, he remains a key part of the batting lineup. The series in Australia offers a great chance for him and Kohli to address doubts about their futures.
Kohli-Rohit era enters new phase
Kohli and Rohit last played in Indian Cricket Team in the Champions Trophy, where Rohit earned Player of the Match in the final for his 76 against New Zealand. Their retirement from Tests earlier this year, after their exit from T20Is following India’s 2024 World Cup victory in Barbados, marked the end of an era.
