US President Donald Trump said that PM Modi assured him that India will stop buying oil from Russia. He called this a significant step in Washington’s efforts to isolate Moscow over the war in Ukraine, according to Reuters.
Trump expressed his earlier concerns about India’s oil purchases from Russia. He said, “I was not happy that India was buying oil. He (Prime Minister Modi) assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia. That’s a big step. Now we’re going to get China to do the same thing.”
Modi assure Trump to end Russian Oil Purchases
Trump acknowledged that India could not stop the shipments right away. He described the change as a process but added that the transition “will be over soon.”
Trump noted that Modi’s assurance is part of a broader diplomatic effort to cut off Moscow’s energy revenue amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He emphasized that ending India’s oil trade with Russia would support international attempts to resolve the situation. “Now we’ve got to get China to do the same thing,” Trump stated, suggesting that pressing Beijing would be easier than what they have just accomplished in the Middle East.
Urges Putin to End War
Trump also reiterated his message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to end the war. “All we want from President Putin is to stop this, stop killing Ukrainians and stop killing Russians because he’s killing a lot of Russians,” he said.
When asked if he saw India as a reliable partner, Trump replied positively. “Yeah, sure. He’s (PM Modi) a friend of mine. We have a great relationship,” he said, as reported by ANI.
