Magellan Advanced Deep-Sea Technology Assists in Rescue Mission for Lost Submarine Titanic

Magellan Titanic

Magellan is working to join the search for OceanGate’s Titanic submersible, which the US Coast Guard said has gone missing with five people trapped inside.

OceanGate, which had teamed up with Atlantic Productions to create 3D images of the Titanic’s wreck last year, said on its website that it had sought assistance in locating the Titan submarine.

As the US Coast Guard tweeted on Monday, OceanGate runs the Titan submersible, which explores the Titanic wreck in the Atlantic Ocean. The sub went out of contact about an hour and 45 minutes into its dive on Sunday. Since 1985, when the Titanic’s wreckage was discovered, and since James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster film, Titanic, dramatized its ill-fated voyage in a blockbuster film that inspired millions of people.

“OceanGate instructed us to mobilize and fly equipment and crew as soon as possible to St. John’s, Newfoundland,” Magellan said on its website.

As of Monday, the Coast Guard said it is searching for a Titan sub about 900 miles from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and that it is working with “partner agencies” to locate it.

Magellan said that it is working with authorities in the US and the UK to seek help in bringing in “specialist equipment” and staff to assist rescue efforts. According to Magellan’s David Thompson, the equipment it is trying to procure was used to produce images of the Titanic wreck.

Magellan said on its website that it is ready to support and fully mobilized to assist.

Atlantic Productions said in May that multiple submersibles spent “many hours” near the Titanic wreck last year as part of the Magellan effort to create 3D images.
