According to The Verge, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman isn’t worried about the user backlash that shut down huge sections of the social media site.
Huffman told employees to “please be mindful” of wearing Reddit gear in an internal memo obtained by The Verge.
We don’t want to be the target of people’s frustrations, he wrote, according to The Verge.re
In response to the reported memo, Reddit declined to comment.
After Reddit announced it would drastically increase prices for third-party developers to access its API, thousands of subreddits affecting millions of viewers are protesting. The developers who created Reddit-reading clients and expanded moderation tools have publicly protested.
Apollo, a popular third-party app, said the changes would cost millions and force it to shut down.
To protest the new policy, popular subreddits run by volunteers announced they would “go dark” and make their forums private starting on Monday.
In the absence of third-party apps, users would be forced to use the official Reddit app, which contains ads.
According to The Verge, Huffman dismissed the outrage in his memo.
Among the noisiest we’ve seen,” he told The Verge. “Our teams are on it, and like all Reddit blowups, this one will pass as well.”
Huffman wrote in The Verge that the protest hasn’t had a significant impact on revenue.”
In addition, he vowed to keep “moving forward” with the API changes that sparked the user revolt.
The only long-term solution is to improve our product, Huffman said.
In an effort to become profitable, Reddit recently laid off about 90 employees, according to the Wall Street Journal.
