Planters’ body Indian Tea Association (ITA) said climate change is threatening the tea industry globally, resulting in lower yields and higher production costs.
Climate change also threatening the long-term viability of the tea industry, causing pest infestations that make pesticide residue management a major issue.
According to ITA, the industry must adopt a multifaceted approach to address climate change issues by promoting sustainable farming practices and reducing carbon footprints.
The association encouraged all stakeholders to invest in research to come up with mitigating solutions in this context.
Rainfall and temperature have also declined in tea-growing regions in recent years, according to ITA.
In areas where tea cultivation is practiced, future projections indicate a substantial reduction in suitability.
Additionally, the industry needs to optimize its use of chemical fertilisers and use renewable energy more effectively.
According to the latest Tea Board data, the country produced 13.43 million kilograms of tea in January 2023, compared to 16.22 million kilograms last year.
