Even after the carpets have been rolled up and the clothes racks have disappeared, some New York Fashion Week guests may still be humming the tunes they heard on the runways.
As models strut down the runway in their latest looks, many designers choose the songs that will accompany them.
Michael Kors told The Associated Press in an interview this week that the soundtrack is so important when putting together a fashion show.
A bohemian flair was evident in Kors’ latest collection: miniskirts, belts, high boots made of suede, and fringe accents. In his early years, he was influenced by women like Tina Turner, Jane Fonda and Gloria Steinem, who were in the front row.
Kors’ team created an all-female soundtrack, with a live string orchestra playing most of it.
In addition to Joan Baez, Stevie Nicks, and Grace Slick, Kors said his anthem was Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love.” “I always think what strikes me emotionally, but I always find a different way to do it.” “Jefferson Airplane orchestrated is definitely a different take on things.”
According to David Blond, designer of The Blonds brand, he and his partner Phillipe Blond see their shows as art pieces inspired by film and music.
It wouldn’t be the same without our soundtracks, not just the visual, but the sound is really important,” David Blond said.
Models walked the runway at The Plaza Hotel to “Georgia on My Mind,” among other songs, according to Carolina Herrera’s creative director Wes Gordon.

Tory Burch is a longtime advocate for women’s empowerment, and she selected iconic female voices for her playlist.
After the show, Burch said, “I wanted to discuss women vocalists and singers … starting with Tammy Wynette.” I believe in women’s empowerment, so the concept of ‘Stand by Your Man’ is ironic, even though Tammy Wynette was an amazing, strong woman.
As part of her show, models walked to opera and Eurythmics, and ended with Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain.” When asked why Burch chose that song, she smiled and said she wanted the choice to be “left to interpretation,” much like Simon did not want to divulge the song’s inspiration in detail.
When putting out new collections, many designers were eager to discuss their music choices.
Mark Badgley of Badgley Mischka said: “There are a lot of designers whose soundtracks inspire every detail on the runway. It definitely influences what we do.
