Why India’s Gaming Industry is on the Rise

In this article, we are going to take a look at the rise of the gaming industry in India, why it happened, and what its future is possibly going to look like.

Gaming Industry India

Within the first nine months of a pandemic-ridden 2020, India found itself in the midst of a significant paradigm shift in terms of its mobile gaming industry. Within those nine months, the country rose the ranks to become the number one country in terms of overall downloads for mobile games with a whopping 7.3 billion installs. That accounts for 17% of the market share all around the world. Of course, this shouldn’t come as that big of a surprise considering that India comprises one of the biggest populations in the world. Aside from that, the global gaming industry in general has been rising at steady paces throughout the past decades. But there are still so many factors that have contributed to this spike in gaming in India.

Another important thing to note here is that the growth in gaming isn’t just limited to the most popular titles. Sure, some franchises continue to reign supreme such as Call of Duty, Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto, and even DOTA 2. However, this immense growth in online gaming covered all sorts of different titles and genres as well. Online casino sites like Betnero saw a huge surge of traffic throughout 2020 during the pandemic. And this trend has only continued well into the middle of 2021. In this article, we are going to take a look at the rise of the gaming industry in India, why it happened, and what its future is possibly going to look like.

An Increasingly Mobile World

India has always served as one of the leading technology hubs in the world. Naturally, many Indian natives are very comfortable and adept at adopting technological devices and integrating them into the way that they live their lives. This is especially true for mobile technology wherein practically everyone in the world has access to some kind of smartphone or tablet device.

These days, smart devices have evolved to become so much more than just communication or productivity tools. In fact, we’ve seen multiple iterations and variations of the mobile industry. Originally, phones were designed to be tools for communication and connectedness. That later on evolved as smartphone hardware became more capable of content consumption and content creation. It was during this era wherein we saw the rise of platforms like Instagram and YouTube. Nowadays, smart mobile devices aren’t just communication and content creation tools anymore. They are also great for gaming. These multimedia devices have hardware that can rival even the best gaming computers from just a decade ago. Aside from that, all of this top-level hardware has been made so accessible by their manufacturers who are competing for very tight market spaces.

The COVID Factor

Another factor that contributed to the rise of gaming in India is the COVID-19 pandemic. Out of all the countries in the world, India is arguably the one that was impacted the most by the pandemic in terms of the economy and public health. Like much of the rest of the world, Indian people were forced indoors and away from public spaces in an attempt to minimize the transmission of the virus. With people being locked in their own homes for a prolonged period of time, many found solace and comfort in their gaming devices.

Whether it be PCs, consoles, or even mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, gamers all over the country spent a lot of their time playing their favorite games. In a world that’s increasingly becoming more and more influenced by technology, it was only natural for people to turn to gaming as a pastime when very little liberties were afforded to them in terms of mobility and going around. In fact, the COVID-19 virus is largely responsible for the growth of gaming in the global market as well. It’s not just India.

A Look into the Future

Looking to the future, it’s difficult to make the argument that the growth of gaming isn’t going to sustain itself. In fact, many corporations and big players are looking to aggressively capitalize on this growing market for advertising opportunities. There are indeed a number of paths that the gaming industry can take moving forward. But it’s not too farfetched to say that it will continue to grow well into the future.
